Fellowship in Optometry
The Importance of role of Optometry in the delivery of ophthalmic care has been well established. For our growing population more optometrists are needed to care for those in need. Though there are excellent institutions providing quality education, hands on exposure to practical aspects of Optometry is sometimes lacking. To bridge this gap, we offer one/ two year fellowship programme in Optometry which will provide comprehensive hands on experience to the budding Optometrists which will make them self reliant in individual or institution practice. The summary of the program is as follows.
Eligibility : Candidates who have passed Baccalaureate in Optometry / Diploma in optometry or Diploma in Ophthalmic assistant courses with an aggregate of 50% marks. The Duration of the course would be 1 Year for those who have completed degree program in Optometry and 2 Years for those who have completed Diploma in Optometry
Curriculam : During the fellowship students will be rotated in all subspecialities like refraction, Contact lenses, Lasik, Biometry, Glaucoma, Orthoptics, Retina, Cornea, Low vision and Community Opthalmology. Theory classes will also be held parallel covering all relevant aspects. Clinical skills in using state of the art equipments in all subspecialty would also be taught. Stipend will be paid monthly to the candidates.
1st year : 3000/- per month
2nd year : 3500/- per month
Subsidized accommodation and boarding will also be provided.
Internship – Fellowship in Optometry
The new curriculum to induct students who have completed their third year and wish to do the internship outside as a part of our Fellow ship program (Lateral entry) which was started from 2009 – 2010 academic year has been well accepted by the students .
During this program, in the first year(internship) they will be simultaneously taught both the theoretical & practical aspects in optometry as mentioned in the curriculum .After the successful completion of internship, in the second year ,students will be given free hand in taking care of regular out patients & all diagnostic procedures. Besides, they have to be involved in the routine academic activities of the Optometry department .
After completing the Fellowship, they will be absorbed in one of our hospitals for a period of one year as a full time Optometrist with a proper pay package and other perks.
During the entire period of their stay, free accommodation & subsidized food will be provided. Though they will not be paid any stipend during the internship period, a monthly stipend of Rs.3500/- will be paid in the second year.
These academic sessions will start from July every year.
