Inauguration of the Tirupur Branch “The Eye Foundation & Thirumurthy Nethralaya”

The new premise of the Tirupur branch, “The Eye Foundation and Thirumurthy Nethralaya” spread over 50,000 square feet is an ultra modern facility with all the latest in Ophthalmic care. This 5 storied building has good Out-patient and In-patient facilities with a well equipped Laboratory to carry out thorough investigations. In trend with the latest advances, THE EYE FOUNDATION at Tirupur covers the whole gamut in Ophthalmology with focus on patient comforts, with proper ambience and appropriate delivery systems. To name a few, the latest Lasik treatment, Lasers for Retinal Diseases, Ocular Imaging, Field Analysers, Operating Microscopes, Phacoemulsification and vitrectomy units are all available at the new center. Under the able guidance of Dr. D. Ramamurthy, Medical Director, The Eye foundation, headed by Dr. J. Ravi, Sr. Consultant, the new hospital functions with Six highly trained, dedicated ophthalmologists supported by a team of optometrists, nursing, paramedical and administrative staff.

The new building was inaugurated on Thursday, the 9th August, 2007 at 5.30 p.m. Shri. N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman& Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies Limited was present as the chief guest and the meeting was presided over by Dr. S.S. Badrinath, Emeritus Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. Shri. A. Sakthivel, President, Tirupur Exporters Association was the guest of Honour.

Teachers Training Program

As a part of our community Out Reach Program, we have felt the need to examine the eyes of the children, in whom the future of the nation lies. Towards this end, we have been carrying out Free Vision Screening at the schools situated in and around Coimbatore. The Government of Tamil Nadu has now authorized and deputed our institution to carry out the vision screening at all the High schools, Hr. Sec. Schools and Government Aided Schools of the Coimbatore Corporation limit. In this regard, “The Eye Foundation” planed to teach the teachers deputed by the government authorities to carry out the preliminary vision screening test at their respective schools and identify the defective students. The hospital would thereafter extend further free treatment required to all the students identified to have defects in their vision.

To launch this endeavor, The Eye Foundation has organized a Teachers Training Program at the Hospital Auditorium on August 2nd, 2007 at 10 A.M. The program was inaugurated by the Mayor of the Coimbatore Corporation. The other dignitaries included the Chief Education Officer, and the District Education officer of the Coimbatore Corporation. The inaugural function was followed by the training program to the teachers.

Techniques & Technology in Ophthalmology

A two day conference was organized at our hospital auditorium on “Techniques & Technology in Ophthalmology” on 16th & 17th June 2007. Around 30 stalwarts who have good track record of excellence in their own field were carefully handpicked to deliver lectures on various aspects of ophthalmology. Around 150 delegates from different parts of the country actively took part in the conference. The workshop encompassed in detail the challenges about the treatment and its management in different clinical settings. The workshop aimed at sharing maximum information with interactive sessions to ensure one to one interaction and ensured excellent opportunity not only to the students but also to the experienced ophthalmologist to brush up and upgrade.

National Conference on “Total Cataract & Refractive Solutions”

A 2 day National Conference on “Total Cataract & Refractive Solutions” was held at The Eye Foundation on 10th & 11th of March 2007.

17 Guest speakers from across the country came and nearly 200 delegates converged for didactic lectures, live surgeries, extensive interactions and wet labs.

Wet labs on Phaco and Phakic IOL provided delegates with hands on experience. Breakfast session provided an excellent opportunity for all delegates to have a one to one discussion with the experts on topics of their choice.

All the sessions can be obtained in the DVD format by sending a Demand Draft of Rs 750 drawn in favour of Nethra Jyothi Trust, payable at Coimbatore.

Refraction - Clinical Refresher 3rd Edition

A clinical refresher on refraction was held at The Eye Foundation hospital auditorium on 17th December 2006. More than 160 Optometrists and Ophthalmic assistants attended the programme. Basics and recent advancements in the field of Optometry was discussed in detail, with a lot of take home messages. This is the third edition of the programme, which has, as in previous years well received by the optometry community.

 

European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons
meeting at London

Dr. D. Ramamurthy, Medical Director, The Eye Foundation attended the XXIV congress of European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting at London held between 9th - 13th September 2006.He was invited to attend close door expert's group meeting on Multifocal IOL's and Wave Front Ablation.

He also visited Professor Michael C. Knorz World Authority on
Refractive Surgery at Mannheim University in Germany.

A commemorative function on “Project Vision” was held on 8th August 2006 at The Eye Foundation auditorium. This was widely attended by heads of institutions of various schools and colleges in Coimbatore District. The program began with a welcome address by Dr. Chitra Ramamurthy, Managing Trustee, Nethta Jyothi Trust who welcomed the gathering and spoke about the common treatable causes of childhood vision impairment. This was followed by a speech of Dr.D.Ramamurthy, Medical Director, The Eye Foundation, about “PROJECT VISION” and its various activities. Besides he narrated that the Eye Screening Program was conducted in 56 schools and 15 colleges during the period, 1st April 2005 to 31st March 2006, of which a total of 61,827 students were examined and 10,948 students were found to have defective vision. This clearly re-emphasizes the importance of such screening camps in the community, he further observed.

Chief guest for the evening Dr.B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore, addressed the gathering and thanked Dr.D.Ramamurthy and Dr. Chitra Ramamurthy and the hospital team for their exemplary work and he urged the school heads to take advantage of these eye camps. The Presiding Officer Mr Rajarajan, District Educational Officer, Coimbatore, requested the Heads of Schools and Colleges to avail of this opportunity and see that all the students found to have defective vision are referred to the base hospital for comprehensive screening and follow up treatment.

Guest of honour Rtn. K.A.Kuriachan spoke about his long term involvement with The Eye Foundation and its projects. The function ended with the vote of thanks by Dr.Shreesh Kumar, Senior Consultant of The Eye Foundation.

Cataract Workshop 2006

With the largest number of Multifocal IOL’s by any institute to its credit, “The Eye Foundation” played host to have a two day national conference on “Cataract” on 22nd and 23rd July 2006.

The host faculty was led by the Medical Director Dr. D. Ramamurthy, the invited faculty included Dr. Abhay Vasavada from Ahmedabad, Dr. Keiki R. Mehta from Mumbai, Dr. Mohan Rajan and Dr. Prema Padmanabhan from Chennai. Each of them are pioneers in their field and contributed extensively in the field of Ophthalmology.

Widely attended by delegates across the country, this workshop aimed at acquisition of newer surgical techniques and brushing upon existing ones. Live surgeries were demonstrated which initiated active discussions on various management scenarios.

 

Our New Larger hospital in Tirupur

The Lasik - Zyoptix work station was inaugurated on February 5th 2006 at our Thirumurthy Nethralaya, branch of the Eye Foundation at Tirupur. The foundation stone laying of our new larger hospital at Tirupur was also inaugurated.

The inauguration was well attended by a huge audience of well wishers from Tirupur at large. The dignitaries and guests of honour blessed the function for the prosperity and growth of the hospital.

Thiru. D. R. Karthikeyan , Former Director, CBI and Director General, National Human Rights Commission was our chief guest and gave the inaugural address. Poojya Swami Dayananda Saraswathi gave the benediction address.

A young Pakistani from a remote village in Pakistan corresponded with us by E-mail, underwent corneal transplant in both his eyes by Dr. Shreesh Kumar, our cornea specialist.


Dr. Ramamurthy was invited to conduct a workshop on Phakic IOL in WEN ZHOU University in SHANGHAI, CHINA.
