Corneal blindness

What is Cornea?

  • Cornea is a transparent portion in the front surface of the eye.
  • It is the main focusing element of the eye.
  • It also acts as a protective layer from any external injuries

What is Corneal blindness?

  • Any scar,injury of the cornea will significantly decrease or sometime lead to the loss of the vision.

What are the causes of Corneal blindness?

  • Corneal injury or trauma
  • Infections of the cornea
  • Malnutrition
  • Surgically induced damage

What is the treatment for Corneal blindness?

  • Corneal transplantation is the only treatment.
  • Corneal transplantation will be successful only with the priceless gift of eye donation
  • Persons with corneal diseases would register their name with the hospital to avail the facility on priority basis.

Who can donate eyes?

  • Any person can pledge his eyes for eye donation with an eye bank.
  • If death occurs to person who has not pledged his eyes,his relatives can inform the nearest eye bank for eye donation.

What is the procedure for eye donation?

  • Any person can pledge their eyes for eye donation with an eye bank
  • If the death occurs to person who has not pledged their eyes, relatives can inform the nearest eye bank for eye donation.

How long does the removal of eye take?

  • Eye of the deceased should be taken within 6 hours after death
  • Whole procedure of eye removal takes only 20 minutes

Does it disfigure the face of the deceased?

  • With careful enucleation there will not be any disfigurement.

Where are the eye donation forms available?

  • Any reputed eye bank will have proper pledge forms and certificates to register your name with the eye bank
  • The Eye foundation, has a fully functioning eye bank and corneal transplantation facilities. Forms are available at our office.

How successful is corneal transplantation?

  • Corneal transplantation is the most successful among organ transplantation surgeries.
  • The chances of tissue rejection is minimal
