What if my eyes are not suitable for Lasik?

Lasik is a proven technology where you can get rid of spectacles or contact lenses. However in certain situations like very high myopic (-power), hyperopic (+power) error, and limited corneal thickness, Lasik may not provide desired results. Here implantable lens called Phakic IOL provides a high-tech yet simple way of correcting your vision.

How does this lens look like? Is it same as contact lens?

This is a small optical lens made of a biocompatible material, Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA). What makes it unique is that it is designed to be attached directly to the Iris (the brown coloured part of your eye) without disturbing the natural lens in the eye. One enjoys good quality of vision without any awareness of the implanted lens.

Do I have to remove these lenses daily?

Once in place, these lenses cannot slip or fall out and is virtually invisible. This need not be removed or cleaned. It is so comfortable within the eye that one will soon forget it's there. Moreover this doesn't require special care, maintenance, solution or accessories.

Is this procedure painful?

This lens is implanted under anaesthetic effect by the eye surgeon and is not at all a painful procedure. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and is usually carried out on an out patient basis.

How this procedure is performed?

First the central area of the lens is precisely positioned for optimum vision correction. Then it is attached at both ends to the Iris.

What are the pre-operative investigations for this procedure?

Accurate measurements of your eyes like precise refraction, ultrasound biometry and specular microscopy are performed. Based on the readings obtained, the lens is tailor made at the lab in Germany.

If I get cataract later what will I do?

When you develop cataract later, unlike other vision correction procedures, Phakic IOL can be removed from the eye at any time. So it is fully reversible.

Are the results guaranteed?

Phakic IOLs have been carefully evaluated over many years, successfully implanted in clinical studies and widely used abroad. Phakic Intraocular lenses produce excellent visual results. However in view of the large refractive errors that are corrected, some patients may have residual powers.
