What is dry eye syndrome?
Dry eyes can result either from decreased tear production
or too much evaporation of the tears from inflammation to your eyelids
(blepharitis) or exposure. This can result in result in burning, stinging,
itching, foreign body sensation, dryness, soreness, heaviness of the
lids, light sensitivity and/or ocular fatigue. Symptoms often are worse
at the end of the day and can be aggravated by certain activities (e.g.
reading, watching television, and working on the computer) and certain
environments (e.g. airplane cabins, air conditioners, smoky rooms.)
Treatment of dry eye involves multiple modalities including lubricants,
tear stimulation, punctual occlusion etc.
What is a pterygium?
A pterygium is a tissue growth onto the surface of the cornea often
caused by sun exposure. It may cause redness, irritation and even decreased
vision if large enough. A symptomatic pterygium requires surgical removal
What is keratoconus?
Keratoconus is condition where the cornea (the outer surface layer
of the eye) is "cone-shaped", instead of round, causing irregularity
of the surface and diminished vision. It typically develops between
the ages of 12 and 25 years. Early cases can be treated with rigid contact
lenses, while late cases may require a corneal transplant. Recently
a technique to arrest its progression (Corneal collagen cross linking)
has also been introduced.
